3D Dual confocal measurement system designed to map the thickness of tomato leafs with 1 um accuracy. This system was designed for a researcher who was attempting to determine the region of the genome responsible for controlling the drought resistance of the tomato plant. For this study, the thickness of approximately 10,000 tomato leaves had to be mapped within a period of approximately 2 weeks, requiring that the time to mount and measure each leaf needed to be on the order of 1-2 minutes. The system was successfully developed and used in the research, with the result that the regions of the genome influencing drought resistance were identified.
